Rooster Fights during the time of Sankranti
Fighting a Systemic III
Sankranti is a major festival in India, celebrated in January, where many north and south Indian sects celebrate the transition from the winter solstice to longer warm days of the Solar Calendar. It’s a highly social event – with bonfires, meals (fairs), kite flying, house visitations, pilgrimages, and more.
Unfortunately, animals feature in the celebrations, often for entertainment at social events. This is heart-breaking.
Goats, roosters, and dogs are commonly reared for fighting and gambling purposes. On Sankranti day, Visakha Society raided the events in Achutapuram, a township in our locality, rescuing 9 Roosters and apprehending 3 persons with the help of local Police. All these joints foster gambling and betting, which are illegal activities. The 9 Roosters had knives tied to their legs! They fight to their deaths with utmost ferocity! We know this to be sadistic entertainment.
A Charge Sheet has been prepared for the arrest of the 3 persons. The Court has banned the joints from keeping any more Roosters. Visakha is keeping with the Police while seeing to the welfare and rehab of the Roosters. The 3 persons will receive punishment according to the law and local regulations around their illegal activities. We have sought the help of a local farmer to care for the Roosters.
We wish to house the Roosters safely in their permanent homes. Please support our work. It is quite comprehensive – rescue, rehab, find foster/permanent homes, educate the public and youth belonging to communities using animals for profit, working with local police stations on education and process.
